Mar. 24th, 2022 10:55 pmyou have no idea how psyched i was to realize jim ourflagmeansdeath was a nonbinary character played by a nonbinary actor (and there are three nonbinary people in the ofmd writer’s room, according to this article)
i genuinely got a little emotional abt it - like, my gender identity is kinda inseparable from my interest in pirate history and fiction. as i’ve mentioned before, i literally realized i was trans as a kid bc i read that anne bonny and mary read were raised as boys and got jealous
for a while those “girl disguises herself as a boy” type stories were all i had, and i just kinda squinted and tried to pretend she didn’t go back to being a girl at the end. i always wished there would be one of those where the person isn’t actually a girl. and now there iiiisss
(i mean there is a very good audio drama about bonny and read in which read is nonbinary but there is a difference between an indie audio drama and an hbo show, y’know?)
the actor who plays jim, vico ortiz, talked about “reclaiming our stories” and i just. i have something in my eye
